Annie Besant was the wife of the Sibsey vicar Reverend Frank Besant. They married in 1867 when she was 20 years old. They had 2 children - Arthur and Mabel.
However, in 1873 they separated due to her increased anti-religious views and her conflict for monetary independence. Annie used to write articles and story books for children and her husband took all her money. She left with her daughter Mabel.
She went to London and became one of the first trade unionists and in 1888 she was the negotiator for the Bryant & May Matchgirls.

Frank remained in Sibsey until his death in 1917.
